CRICKET: Third generation Kidderminster Victoria batsman Neil Pinner produced an impressive display as the Chester Road side got off the mark with a winning draw against Walmley in the Birmingham and District League Premier Division on Saturday.
Worcestershire Academy star Pinner, 17, top scored with 88 runs as KVCC produced an explosive display but could not bowl out determined Walmley at Chester Road.
Following in the footsteps of his father, Brian, and grandfather, Bill, the young batsmen showed a cool head to hold the innings together as the home side made 266-7 in 55 overs.
South African paceman Mario Saliwa also made a fine debut at home, with figures of 4-58 suggesting he can be a real force in the league this season.
The hosts started slowly, with Phil Shaw (22) and Josh Knappett (31) both out after solid starts.
Pinner was the constant in Kidderminster Victoria's batting order as the other wickets tumbled, with Craig Wood (13), captain Jonathan Wright (14) and Mark Mansell (4) playing supporting roles.
The hosts had reached 142-5 with 35 of the 55 overs bowled but a 71 partnership by Pinner and Andy Siwicki gave them a lift.
Siwicki was caught on 33 runs by Mohammed Usman as he tried to launch a six, while Chris Pyke made a quickfire 14, which included a six, before he was dismissed.
Tail ender Ted Baylis supported Pinner well and struck two fours and a six in his 17 not out, as the home side finished on an imposing 266.
Chris Howells (77) and Booth (71) soon set about the Kidderminster bowling, with the score reaching 168 by the 38th over.
Wright broke the partnership when he caught and bowled Booth.
Saliwa's opening spell of six overs had cost 41 runs, but his change to the Railway End saw him step up a gear and he bowled at great pace.
The spritely South African bowled superbly in his second spell, conceding 17 runs from eight overs.
Pyke took a good catch off Wright to see Adam Breakspear for a duck. Saliwa struck again when he had Baker caught by Pinner on the boundary as Walmley fell to 169-5 Howells had batted well but was struggling to cope with Saliwa's pace and was forced into a shot, which resulted in Shaw taking a good catch.
However, with light failing Walmley tail enders Paul Griffiths and Greg Ricketts stubbornly held on to ensure they earned a share of the points.
Wright and Baylis also proved handy with the ball, taking two wickets each as Walmley ended their innings on 213-8.
