Tories take overall control of Wyre Forest

THE Tories have taken overall contol of Wyre Forest District Council following the overnight election count.

After the first two results - seats held by the Liberal Democrats and the Liberals - the next nine results all went the Conservatives' way.

At the end of the counting, they had won 10 out of the 14 seats contested this year with four new seats and six maintained.

The Conservatives now hold 22 out of the 42 total council seats and took the seats of the council's only two independent councillors.

They also took one seat from Labour in Habberley & Blakebrook and one from the Liberals in Broadwaters.

John Campion, the Conservative leader, said: "I think it's fantastic. It is a ringing endorsement of the hard work we have done over the last four years with a minority administration.

"I think we have of course benefited from a national swing against Labour but we said we just wanted to be judged against our record and tonight we were judged against a record we are proud of."

He explained: "We set out our manifesto on two separate occasions and said to the public this is what we are going to do.

Tonight, we took a 41 per cent share of the vote which is a massive endorsement."

He added: "We will now carry on what we have been doing. We will be building on the success we have had. We are here for the business of the district. It's not about glory but getting the job done."
