TWO major multi-million pound redevelopment schemes will provide a much-needed boost to Stourport’s economy and tourism.

A £19 million marina project has been announced, as well as final proposals for a £7 million basin gateway scheme James Brindley Wharf. Developers claim visitors, jobs and a £55 million return will be brought to the town as a result.

Stourport-based Thomas Vale Construction, Kidderminster’s Clive Fletcher Developments and Walton and Hipkiss and BBLB Architects – both Stourbridge-based – are working together on both developments and work should start by mid-2013.

Marina Quays will be located between Sandy Lane industrial estate and the River Severn.

The proposals include 408 berths, 108 one and two-bed holiday apartments, a club house, restaurant, bar, gymnasium, boat sales, hire facilities and accommodation.

Thomas Vale said it had learned there was “significant supply and demand” in Stourport for up-market mooring berths.

It said the scheme offered land-based leisure development alongside commercial space, ensuring the marina remained financially viable in the long term. Wildlife and ecology zones and picnic areas will also be created.

Final plans for James Brindley Wharf, a gateway between Bridge Street and the historic basins, have also been announced.

The scheme, which revealed in February and originally set to begin building in the autumn, will include a 24,000sq ft office space, five retail units, six town houses and 14 apartments on the former Lloyds Garage site.

Thomas Vale added the development would open up the “historic core of the town” as well as attracting new businesses and residents.

Developers say both schemes will take about 18 months to complete.

Louise Brooke-Smith, of development consultants Brooke Smith Planning, which is working with developers, said: “We are all now at the stage where we are confident this is a fantastic opportunity for the town and its residents to get behind.”

Wyre Forest District Council leader, Conservative councillor John Campion, said the projects would increase Stourport’s attraction as a visitor destination by “making use of one of its heritage assets – the canal basins”.
