THOUSANDS of Wolverley residents turned out in the sunshine on Saturday afternoon to attend the village’s annual carnival and fete.

The five float procession was led by the West Midland Fire Service Pipe Band which was followed by the Carnival Queen, Princess and Rosebud in a decorated Land Rover.

Floats were entered by The Queens Head, The Lock Inn, Wolverley CE Secondary School, Wolverley Sebright VA Primary School and Wolverley Sebright Cygnets Nursery.

The procession also included Wolverley Scouts, Wyre Forest Naval Cadets, Kidderminster Drum Street Band, Expressions School of Dance and Severn Area Rescue Association among others.

Arena events were started by the fire service pipe band on their arrival at Memorial Hall Field which was followed by the opening of the fete by carnival queen Laura Lane, princess Shelby Smith and rosebud Lauren Parkinson with a guard of honour by The Svartland Vikings.

During the day there was a Morris Dancing display by the primary school, singing performances by students from the secondary school and demonstrations by the school of dance and Eclipse Martial Arts.

The day’s events concluded with a Harris Hawk display as well as circus skills and a display and workshop by the drum street band.

About 2,000 visitors attended the day which featured many stalls from local organisations as well as a bouncy castle, slide, merry-go-round, penalty shoot out competition and refreshments including a tearoom.

Charles Sherrey, chairman of Wolverley Carnival Team, said: “One of the highlights was the appearance of Bryn Thomas, headteacher of the secondary school, in the Wolverley Stocks.

“Students from the school and others enjoyed throwing wet sponges at Mr Thomas for a small contribution to carnival funds.”

Funds generated by the carnival, fete and May Day fair will be donated to non-profit making organisations and projects in the village.
