RESIDENTS of all ages joined together to light beacons in Bewdley and Kidderminster to commemorate the Queen’s 90th birthday.
In Bewdley, the beacon was lit by Ben Cope on Crundalls Hill, using a flaming bow and arrow to great effect, igniting 30 foot high flames which could be seen across the town.
Anxious residents in the town were so concerned, there were numerous phone calls to Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service.
The event was hosted by Chris and Lyn Granger of Grey Green Farm. The group were joined by Gordon Grainger, who more than 70 years ago had gathered firewood as a scout for the VE Day beacon lit on the same spot to celebrate the end of the war.
Meanwhile, in Brinton Park, in Kidderminster, residents gathered at the bandstand where a fire was lit in a basket by the Mayor of Kidderminster to replicate similar events across the country.
Ninety candles were also lit and residents sang happy birthday.
Earlier in the day, celebrations were held at the Holy Innocents’ Church with displays about the Queen’s life including one of a birthday cake which pupils had written messages, drawn pictures or written their names on 90 cut-out paper candles.
