A KIDDERMINSTER campaign group has launched an appeal to fund the legal costs of a sacked NHS “whistle-blower” who is taking his case to the High Court.
Former Worcestershire Acute NHS Trust radiographer Ken Hall is appealing in the High Court, on March 27, against a decision by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) to strike him off.
Father-of-Two Mr Hall faced misconduct charges from his former employers and brought before the HCPC on two occasions, firstly in February 2016 and the second last December.
On both occasions, the panel ruled against Mr Hall – who had left Trust and got a job elsewhere - resulting in the decision for him to be struck off just before Christmas.
But Nigel Gilbert, chairman of the Betrayed By Their Trust (BBTT), claimed the allegations were brought against Mr Hall after he warned managers about a huge backlog in unexamined x-rays and scans at Kidderminster, Worcestershire Royal and Redditch’s Alexandra hospitals back in 2014.
Last year, an inquiry was launched by the Care Quality Commission after thousands of unchecked scans were discovered by them during an unannounced inspection.
The Trust said new procedures had been put in place to deal with the backlog.
Mr Gilbert said: “We are raising £1,000 towards the legal costs of NHS whistle-blower, Ken Hall, against the HCPC decision to strike him off. His career has been wrecked, and his case is a matter of public interest
“He can no longer earn a living as a radiographer. He and his wife, Karla, have two children under three years of age.
“The complaints the Trust made about him to his professional body, the HCPC, did not affect his skills as a radiographer or his treatment of patients
“Ken has served the Worcestershire public well. In 2014 he repeatedly warned managers of Worcestershire Acute Hospitals Trust that there was a backlog of x-rays and scans un-examined.
“Meanwhile, he had been vindicated as a whistle-blower and it was at his instigation that the CQC carried out an unannounced inspection at Worcestershire Royal on July 27.”
