UNDER-fire Wyre Forest MP Mark Garnier has apologised to his constituents for the controversial ‘sex toy’ revelations that have rocked Westminster.
Mr Garnier told The Shuttle the events that happened in 2010 had been taken “outside the context” they occurred and stressed he hadn’t pressurised his former aide into doing anything.
On October 29, the Mail on Sunday reported that Mr Garnier had sent his then PA Caroline Edmondson out to buy two toys from a sex shop in Soho.
She also said the International Trade Minister had called her “sugart**s” in front of witnesses in a bar.
But speaking exclusively to The Shuttle, Mr Garnier said: “The events of 2010 concerning myself and a former member of staff have been reported outside the context and circumstances in which they occurred.
“At the time we were friends, and I want to be clear that I did not force or pressure her into doing anything.
“It is right that the public expect high standards of behaviour from their elected representatives, and I apologise to my constituents that this situation has occurred.”
Ms Edmondson stopped working for Mr Garnier shortly after both incidents occurred in 2010. She is now working as Commons secretary to former cabinet minister John Whittingdale.
Her damning claims resulted in the Cabinet Office launching an investigation to establish whether Mr Garnier had broken the Ministerial Code of Conduct. The inquiry is still ongoing.
The 53-year-old father-of-three has faced a barrage of criticism since the revelations came to light with calls for him to step down from both is roles as district MP, which he has held since 2010 and successfully defended twice, and International Trade Minister – to which he was appointed in 2016.
