FRAN O’Connor could not have been happier with her performance at the British Swimming Championships in Sheffield after she set her fastest times in over two years.
The 22-year-old was in stunning form, reaching the final of the S7 50 metres and 100m freestyle races.
The Kidderminster swimmer, who has cerebral palsy, finished ninth in two strong races but she can be rightly pleased with her impressive displays.
The times of 37.67 seconds and one minute and 19.51 were the fastest times she had set in both the 50m and 100m in two-and-a-half years and proof that her hard work training with Wyre Forest Swimming Club had paid off.
Over the last two years O’Connor has worked with Alan Bircher and his successor as head coach at Wyre Forest Mark Wilmott to re-ignite her love for swimming.
Father Kevin O’Connor said: “Fran was absolutely delighted with her performances.
“British swimming is strong right now, so to make the finals in both events and set her quickest times in two and a half years was fantastic.
“She had fallen out of love with swimming a few years ago but the people down at Wyre Forest have really helped her fall for it all over again.”
Now O’Conor is targeting more success at the British National Youth Championships in Sheffield at the end of July, which is also open to disabled competitors.
She will be aiming to round off an encouraging year in style. The Wyre Forest flyer is also very close to being able to represent to swim for Paralympics Ireland.
