Published on 22/10/2020

SHEILA GORDON (nee McCORMICK) On October 6th, in Holmwood Care Home, Sheila Gordon (aged 92) passed away peacefully and in the presence of her son Michael Gordon. Sheila was born and raised in Leeds, W. Yorks, attended Leeds Girls Grammar School and at the age of 24 left England for Dar Es Salaam and life in East Africa for the next 20 years with her husband George. Sheila became a major figure in the Girl Guide movement in Uganda and a principal founder of the Kampala Girl Guide Organisation, which continues to this day. Sheila and George moved to Blakedown in 1972 where Sheila became a member of St James the Great Church choir and long term volunteer for the Church itself . During her time in Blakedown she was also involved in much charity/voluntary work, from Meals of Wheels, The W.I (of which she became President), Lea Castle Hospital and her continued involvement in the Girl Guides in addition to many other individual causes that were in the service of the local Wyre Forest community. Sheila Gordon was also the unpaid founder, working from a borrowed Council office in central Birmingham at nights and with just one telephone line, of an Organisation that went on to become an established UK wide service to those who had problems with drug abuse ; Drug-line. Shelia was pre-deceased by her husband George and is survived by her son Michael, daughter Wendy, grandchildren Brigette, Lauren and Frank plus great grandchildren, Huck, Doug and Callie. We also wish mention her large and dearly loved family, from her fathers side, in Costa Rica, especially her cousins Maureen McCormick -Pacheco and Harry McCormick-Garcia. Current circumstances sadly dictate that attendance at her funeral in Blakedown Church on Oct 28th at 1.00 pm has had to be restricted to invitees only.
