Dad, one day I won't have to lie to Mum. When she tells me that you have never visited in all the time she's been in the home, I tell her that you have, it's just that you seem to visit her at a time when she's asleep. I tell her this because I can't bear to break her heart all over again. That's the thing with dementia, it's a comfort, like denial is, so she completely forgot that you died. That's why I tell her you visit when she's asleep because I know that way that in the moments when the dementia isn't there, she'll know you visit her when she's asleep. Because I know only too well that you would have if you could have. Then Mum seems to slip back to the time when you and her first met, and she says "Does he like me do you think.?" It's heart breaking, I want the song of Luther Van Dross 'Dance with my father', to be real; but it's not and I have to say instead, "he doesn't just like you Mum, he loves you deeply." I have to hope that's enough. Why couldn't it have been like the film 'The notebook'. Why couldn't that have been you two. A love like yours never breaks, it can't break. I know she'll ask again, she'll say "How's your Dad, what's he up to." And I'll say "He's fine Mum, he's in a lovely place, and you'll be in that lovely place with him one day." And then she will be an angel like you Dad.
