A GOLD-medal winning 400m runner visited a Stourport school to inspire students to become sports volunteers.

Athlete Daniel Caines visited Stourport High School where the students were joined by pupils from King Charles I School and Bewdley School for a training session.

The Sports Makers programme, being driven by Sport England’s People, Places, Play initiative, is aimed at people over the age of 16 who are or want to become involved in sports volunteering.

The key stage four and five students took part in a training course which was held by the Sports Partnership Herefordshire and Worcestershire.

During the training, Mr Caines spoke to the pupils about how he won gold at the World Indoor Championships in 2001 where his time of 45.61 seconds was the second fastest in the world.

The students also learnt how to use the Olympic and Paralympic values to motivate and engage people to participate in sport.

The pupils are now registered as official Sport Makers and will begin logging their volunteer hours on the Sport Makers website, where they will be recognised and rewarded for their efforts.
