A MATHS guru and Stourport school “legend” has seen her students record the best set of results of any of her classes in 32 years.

Wendy Cavendish, 53, joined Stourport High School and VIth Form centre at the age of 21 as a maths teacher.

It remains the only school she has ever worked at and this year 100 per cent of her students studying A-level maths passed the exam, with 89 per cent gaining A* to C grade – up from 57 per cent the year before.

The more advanced further maths A-level qualification, which was being taught for the first time at the school, saw 100 per cent of pupils pass with all seven getting A* to C grades.

Mrs Cavendish, the school’s longest-serving member of staff, said: “The results are fantastic this year, the best results I have ever had and more As than we have had previously.

“This is the first year we have taught further maths at A-level and the students have really stepped up and worked hard and I have had to work hard too.”

Student Becky Harvey, 18, who achieved A* in both maths and further maths, including gaining 100 per cent of marks available in six out of the 12 modules studied, said: “Mrs Cavendish was one of the best teachers we could ever have.

“She puts 100 per cent in to every single student, runs after-school maths classes every week – it is just amazing. She is one of the main factors in doing so well – I could not have done it without her. She is a bit of a legend in the school and is the guru for maths.”

Responding to the praise, Mrs Cavendish added: “A lot of people ask me about anything that goes on in the school – they ask me about it because I have been here for so long and seen so many changes.

“Different students every year, even some of the weaker students, out-performed what we expected. I am really proud of all of the students and it has been a pleasure helping them to progress to the next phase of their future.”
