DRIVERS in Wyre Forest are being warned by police to take "extra care" on icy roads after several incidents were reported this morning.
West Mercia officers attended a number of incidents cause by black ice on roads in the district during the rush hour, including two collisions at Habberley Road which blocked it from about 8am until 11.30am. No one was seriously hurt.
There were also two incidents during the morning at Clows Top with the first one blocking the A456 near the Colliers Arms pub at 8.20am when a Fiat lost control and left the road, hitting a hedge. The woman driving it was reported to be trapped in the vehicle and was released by fire crews.
An ambulance was also called to the scene but her injuries were not thought to be serious. The road was closed for about an hour.
At about the same time as the A456 was being reopened, at 9.20am, there was a collision nearby on the B4202 involving an Audi A3 and a VW transporter van. The two men driving those vehicles received minor injuries and were due to go to hospital. The vehicles were substantially damaged and the road was partially blocked for about 90 minutes.
PC Ryan Petford, who attended both Clows Top incidents, said: "There was clearly black ice on the road at both scene and while it would be inappropriate to say at this stage what part that played, if any, in these collisions it was clear other drivers on those roads were not taking heed of the conditions.
"While managing traffic there I had cause to stop about half-a-dozen drivers who were driving too fast for the conditions and advise them to slow down. In icy weather like we had this morning it's essential to drive according to the conditions and cut your speed.
"People need to take more care, give themselves more time and distance to slow down when driving behind vehicles and approaching junctions and to give themselves more time for their journeys before setting out."
