A PLAQUE has been unveiled at Wolverley CE Secondary School commemorating the centenary of the start of the First World War.
The secretary of the Kidderminster branch of the Royal British Legion Peter Dunn officially unveiled the plaque to remember people who gave their lives during the 1914 to 1918 conflict.
The history department also ran a competition for students to come up with ideas for the plaque and the winner was chosen as year 11 student Connor Rook, who wrote a thought-provoking poem.
Connor’s poem Let us be Thankful and Remember is now on permanent display in the Sebright foyer of the school.
Mr Dunn said: "I have been associated with Wolverley CE Secondary School for several years as a supporter of their Remembrance tide ceremonies.
"The overall standard of entries for the history competition was quite remarkable and I commend everyone for their effort. Connor’s winning entry, in particular, was extremely mature in its expression.”
Mark Pollard, acting headteacher, said: "The standard of the entries from students was extremely high and it was clear that it was a subject that really touched them.
"We would like to thank Peter for judging the competition and we are extremely proud to now have a permanent memorial to those in the local area who fought in the First World War."
Connor and the runners-up Joshua Jolly, Harry Adam, and Victoria Deakin received book tokens as prizes.
