MORE THAN £7,000 has been raised for Cure Leukaemia at an annual golf day in memory of a Kidderminster man who died of the cancer.
The eighth annual Stephen Hayden Golf Day raised £7,600 for the charity, based at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham, where the former King Charles I High School student received treatment.
There were 16 teams teeing off at the Wharton Park Golf and Country Club, Bewdley and more than 70 people attended an evening dinner where further fundraising activities, including a raffle and auction, took place.
Stephen died of Acute Myeloid Leukaemia in August, 2006, aged 26.
Since then, Stephen’s family have raised more than £100,000 to help fund leukaemia research, with half of the money coming from the eight charity golf days.
Roy, Stephen’s father, said: “It was a very successful day and the weather was very kind to us.
“Everybody enjoyed the day and we were privileged to have sporting personalities like Ron Atkinson and Ashley Giles taking part, together with former West Bromwich Albion players Nick Cross, Joe Mayo and John Lovatt.”
