AN Abberley pupil has won the chance to have a meal he designed cooked by celebrity chef Heston Blumenthal before it is sent into space.
Archie Luckett, 8, of Abberley Parochial VC Primary School, will have his design turned into a meal that could be sent to European Space Agency astronaut Tim Peake.
Children at schools all over the UK have designed meals for the astronauts as part of their curriculum.
Abberley pupils have used the project as part of their connected curriculum, which incorporates and combines many subject areas, including science and design technology.
The winning menu ideas were selected by Mr Peake and Mr Blumenthal, who were looking for fun and balanced menus that had an element of Britishness as well as the potential to be transformed into a space dinner.
Archie’s savoury menu of a full English breakfast , in the guise of a large square burger, is called the Big Breakfast Launch.
He will now be invited to Mr Blumenthal’s development kitchens to work with him for the day, developing the idea further and turning it into real space food that will be launched to the International Space Station (ISS) in 2015.
Claire Shelley, class teacher, said: “We are looking forward to our trip to Heston’s restaurant to work alongside food scientists to create Archie’s meal.
“It will be a unique opportunity to bring ideas back into school to enhance our delivery of the national curriculum.”
Mr Blumenthal said: “This has been such an amazing experience. The students are incredibly inventive and creative, quite possibly the next great chefs or scientists of tomorrow.
“I cannot wait to work with them in the experimental kitchen and see their final dishes.”
Children were asked to design a British-inspired meal, taking account of good nutritional principles as well as the constraints of space, such as handling, packaging and preservation.
Mr Peake said: “I’m incredibly impressed with the creative and mouth-watering entries we’ve received from children all over the UK.
“I’m really looking forward to enjoying a great British space dinner on board the ISS.
“This British-inspired menu will be a very special link back to planet Earth.”
