TAX DISC MAYHEM WARNING BY WYRE FOREST CAB
Wyre Forest Citizens Advice Bureau [CAB] is warning motorists that tax discs will no longer be issued from 1st October (this week). Research by the CAB shows that half of all drivers are unware of the change or that in future, the Police will use electronic surveillance to catch drivers of untaxed cars.
According to the DVLA there is a strong correlation between untaxed cars and drivers on the road without insurance but Wyre Forest CAB manager Kate Bennett said:
“Drivers who sell their cars must tell the DVLA immediately as they will be liable for a £1,000 fine if they do not and will still be liable to pay any fines incurred by the new owner. Although an owner will lose the unexpired portion of the current month’s car tax and buyers will have to buy a whole month’s tax even if buying close to the end of a month, there are some advantages in the new system. For example, as well as the option to pay every 6 months, from 1st October, it will be possible to pay monthly and the charge for paying by instalments will only be 5% higher than the annual charge, not 10% as now”.
She went on: “Buyers of a car must also ensure that the seller notifies the DVLA using the old log book and ensure that they get a new log book, if necessary by applying for a new one. DVLA think that there will not be an increase in car tax evasion but we have our doubts. Motoring organisations are also concerned with RAC claiming that it will result in tax evasion of up to £167illion.
Kate said: “Change is always with us but Wyre Forest drivers must realise that the change on 1st October will affect them”
