PLANTING seed for future meals, Wolverley's new and only community allotment site will have its grand opening this weekend.
With long waiting lists for allotments throughout Kidderminster, with the closest to the village in Cookley, Wolverley Allotment Society took it upon themselves to open one and the official cutting of the ribbon to open the ground will happen on Sunday (July 26) at 1.30pm, just in time for the first harvest of vegetables.
Jenny Bull, from the society, said: "We wanted a community allotment in Wolverley because a number of residents wanted to grow their own fruit and vegetables and sites in Kidderminster had long waiting lists. There is a small allotment site in Cookley, but again there was a long waiting list.
"We wanted an inclusive allotment site, open to all members of the community which is why the first funding application we made was for raised beds for the less able."
The site, which has been funded by donations from a number of companies and charities, including BSW Timber of Carlisle, Cooks Nurseries, Titan Steel Wheels, The Woodland Trust, Hire It, Kidderminster, local councillors, and more, has 40 plots of carious sizes and 10 raised beds.
But, not only are people cultivating their own vegetables, the society have included a wild flowers meadow and bee hives on the site and will be planting a community orchard in the autumn.
At the grand opening, which will be open to the public from 1pm, there will be plants, gardening products, books, tombola, bric-a-brac, raffle, tea and wonderful homemade cakes on sale before the ribbon to officially open the site is cut by Maurice Lander, the regional representative of the National Allotment Society, at 1.30pm.
An Open Day event will follow straight after from 2pm until 4pm.
