A KIDDERMINSTER model has been making international headlines after undressing in the middle of a New York City subway train to deliver her body-shaming message.
Earlier this year Iskra Lawrence, from Broadwaters, shamed an online troll who claimed she was “fat”, and death threats hidden from her by her dad were shown to her as part of a BBC programme on online bullying.
The 26-year-old, who at size 14 is classed as plus size in the modelling industry, has become a prominent anti-bullying campaigner, so decided to deliver the powerful speech in America after removing her top.
Speaking to passengers, who applauded her speech, Miss Lawrence said: “I grew up hating what I saw in the mirror because society told me I was not good enough.
“That is the media, that is society making a small standard of beauty, when we are so much more than that.
“This body is not just something to be objectified, to be grabbed, to be looked at. This is my vessel. This is my home. I respect it.”
The video has already been widely shared and viewed thousands of times across social media.
Speaking to the Shuttle to explain the video, Miss Lawrence said: "I wanted to spark a conversation about something that is a huge passion of mine, and I love having the opportunity to share my voice with others and hope that I can influence them to respect their bodies and learn to love themselves and others.
"If you choose to put yourself out there you open yourself up for criticism. I know I cannot please everyone but the positive impact on so many lives hugely out weighs any negativity.
"I will always keep fighting for self-care and healthy body image in the media because I don't want future generations to go through the same body image struggles I had growing up."
Miss Lawrence received a number of positive messages on Twitter after releasing and promoting the video.
Julie Elwood wrote: “That’s why I admire you and think you’re awesome,” while Ryan Frounks posted “As a man whose body isn’t all muscles and six-pack, which most magazine pictures imply is perfect, can I just say thank you.”
Ricardo Diaz added: “You’re impacting a lot of people.”
The former Holy Trinity School pupil faced adversity as a teenager when she was dropped from her modelling agency after being told she was too big, but she has gone on to become one of the most successful models in the UK.
Earlier this week Miss Lawrence was included in the BBC’s 100 international most inspirational and influential women for 2016.
