HUNDREDS came together to bid a final farewell to a popular "proud gypsy man" at a funeral today (Monday, October 25).
Grandfather-of-42 Edward Griffin Jones became a popular figure among the traveller community in Stourport during his life.
Mr Jones was born in Shropshire and has a twin brother named Thomas. He travelled all around Wales and England working on the land and harvesting crops. His wife Betty died 20 years ago.
In his later years he developed dementia and his family thanked those who cared for him during this period. He died on September 29, 2021 at the age of 88.
People from across the country attended a service at St James' Church at Hartlebury.
His coffin was transported to the church by horse and carriage from his home at Lower Heath Caravan Park.
Paying tribute at the funeral, his great-grandson Brandon, said: "He was more than a grandad, he was a king. There's some light that he's with granny now."
Reader James Homer said at the service: "The family would like to thank of of the carers and nurses who looked after him. He is reunited with his beloved Betty."
His grandson Tom also sang a heartfelt rendition of Wind Beneath My Wings at the service.
Mr Jones' burial was held at St Mary's Church at Bishop Wood in the afternoon.
His grandson James Doe, who described Mr Jones as a "proud gypsy man" who was "loved by many" said between 300 and 400 people attended.
He said: "He would have loved the send off with flowers and his wagons and horses. It was a send off fit for royalty.
"We had a really good turnout. Everything went to plan."
Mr Doe thanked Hoskins Family Funeral Services and Hudsons florists in Kidderminster for their support.
