CULT indie bands and music fans will come together to celebrate an iconic Kidderminster venue at a heritage blue plaque unveiling next year.

The Market Tavern Plaque Day Celebration will be held on March 19 in honour of the former music venue, which saw acts such as Radiohead, Catatonia and Robert Plant take to its stage in the 90s.

A crowd funder was started by past promoter Mark Badgeman to raise money for the plaque, with the target being reached in two hours.

The plaque will be located at the flats at Ray Mercer Way, off Comberton Hill, where the venue stood prior to demolition. It will be unveiled by singer Jim Bob of indie group Carter USM, who played at the venue in its heyday.

After speeches, there will be a Q&A event featuring Mr Badgeman, former Market Tavern landlord Andy Price, and musical guests.

On the evening a concert will be held at new Kidderminster music venue 45 Live, which will feature bands who previously performed at the Market Tavern.

The lineup includes Redditch pop punk band Funbug, who will reunite for the show, as well as Full Pelt, Sister Sandwich and West Midlands.

There will also be a 90s 'Ectoplasmic Sonic Stomp disco' until the early hours.

Mr Badgeman, who is organising the event, said: "I couldn't be anymore excited really. I can't believe the love for the venue and enthusiasm locally.

"I'm thrilled it's at a stage that it's being recognised with a blue plaque.

"People are keen to relive those days and support a new venue."

He says he feels like he's "handing down the baton" to a new generation of music fans, who he hopes will support 45 Live in the same way he supported the Market Tavern 30 years ago.

Tickets for the Market Tavern Plaque Day Celebration cost £9.45 and are available via Eventbrite.
