A WELL-known Bewdley resident, who led many domino and crib pub teams to victory, has died at the age of 100.

Peter Kite was born and bred in Old Hill in the Black Country. He left school at 14, with no formal qualifications, but ended up creating his own successful building contracting company, Peter Kite and Sons.

After the Second World War, the firm was responsible for building schools and many new council houses throughout the area.

Mr Kite lived in Halesowen for 40 years and had three children, Derek, Pearl and Bryan, before moving to a smallholding in Bewdley, where he spent many happy hours tending his garden, growing roses and vegetables.

He served as a Conservative councillor in Halesowen in the late 1960s and 70s, as well as being a Worcestershire county councillor.

In his spare time, he was a dedicated West Bromwich Albion fan and also won many trophies from his time as captain of many Bewdley and Kidderminster domino and crib pub teams.

He lived independently until ill health recently forced him into a retirement home in Stourbridge, where he celebrated his 100th birthday on January 18, proudly receiving a telegram from the Queen.

Mr Kite died on February 23, leaving his three children, grandchildren, Rachel, Ann, Emma and Claire and great-grandsons, James and Justin.

His funeral was held at Lawrence Lane Methodist Church, Cradley Heath.

His daughter, Pearl, said: "He had a strong will and determination and a great ability to work very hard at many things.

"He will be sadly missed by a lot of people because he was so well known in the community."
