POLICE have issued a warning after two women posed as medical staff in an attempt to enter a 78-year-old's home.

The two reportedly visited an address on Cotswold Close in Kidderminster under the premise of attending to take the pensioner's blood pressure.

The incident happened at around 9.30pm on Thursday (December 29).

West Mercia Police have said the occupant refused to let the women in until she checked their identities with her doctor's surgery.

She was able to do this the next morning and the surgery confirmed the women had not been sent by them.

The women have been described as white, with one in her late 30s and the other in her early 40s.

Police have shared guidance on how to deal with cold callers at the doorstep and to minimize risk.

On the West Mercia Police Neighbourhood Matters website, PC Max Unitt said: "If someone knocks on your door: check who it is by looking through a window or peep-hole.

"If it's not someone you know and trust or a business caller who has made a pre-arranged appointment, do not open the door. This advice applies whatever uniform the caller appears to be wearing or ID card they are carrying and however urgent their business claims to be.

"Tell unexpected business callers to leave and come back later at an agreed time when you can have someone else with you.

"In the meantime, check their credentials by calling the organisation they claim to represent. Do so by looking up the number in your telephone book rather than using one on any card they might give you as this could simply put you through to an accomplice of a potential offender.

"Report suspicious activity to the police. No matter how small it may seem officers would rather be called to something that turns out to be legitimate than miss the opportunity to prevent a crime or catch an offender.
