A "LOUD boom" was heard by many residents across Wyre Forest last night when a bomb disposal team detonated a WWII explosive device.

West Mercia Police confirmed that old war artillery was found at an address in Lower Lickhill Road, Stourport, at around 9pm on Wednesday (January 11).

The device was removed and taken to the War Memorial Park where a bomb disposal team carried out a controlled explosion.

Some have said they heard the explosion as far as Bewdley and Kidderminster.

David Johnson heard the bomb go off from his home in Hartlebury. He said: “It was a really loud deep boom. I’ve never heard anything like that before”.

Residents took to Facebook to share their alarm on the '"We love Stourport-on-Severn" past and present day' page.

Ant Taylor said: "I heard it and thought to myself 'fireworks - at this time of night?'"

Alison Lane said: "It was really loud and it shook my house at 11.30pm. Scared me to death but I couldn't see what it was. The park was lit up which was odd at that time of night".

Ian Mark 'Olly' Hollis said: "Crikey, how did I sleep through that?"

A spokesperson for West Mercia Police said: "Around 9pm last night police were informed an old war artillery had been found at an address in Lower Lickhill Road in Stourport.

"The device was removed to a nearby park where Explosives Ordnance Disposal (EOD) carried out a controlled explosion".

Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service attended the incident to assist officers.

In a statement, the service said: "The crew were responding to a request from West Mercia Police to provide scene lighting.

"A World War 2 explosive device was detonated by a bomb disposal team with fire service personnel providing cordon control assistance and scene lighting".
