THE ownership of allotments in Cookley has changed hands, Wyre Forest District Council has announced.
The allotments, off Lionfields Road, are now the responsibility of Wolverley and Cookley Parish Council.
The ownership of the site was handed over to them by Wyre Forest District Council.
The move is part of the district council’s localism agenda. This is when it supports Town and Parish councils as well as other community organisations to take ownership of assets or to run services.
Councillor Dean Cox, chairman of Wolverley and Cookley Parish Council said: “We are delighted to take on the allotments. They are an important part of the village and we wanted to make sure the land is still available for growing.
"Allotment gardening is not only good for your physical health but for your mental health too. It provides a sense of purpose and an ideal opportunity to get outdoors and be active at all times of the year.”
Councillor Tracey Onslow, Wyre Forest District Council’s cabinet member for culture, leisure, arts and community safety said: “Allotments are a fabulous way to build communities and to connect people and nature.
"By working with Wolverley and Cookley Parish Council we have been able to secure the future of the allotments and plot holders can continue their passion for gardening at the site.
"Our localism agenda is all about working together to try to make sure the services residents value are still available.”
There is no change for plot holders. The site will continue to be managed by Franche, Habberley and Cookley Community Allotments Association. All 14 plots are currently taken and the waiting list is closed.
