COUNCILLORS sarcastically celebrated five years since the closure of a road which was damaged after a landslide.

A group of councillors from Wolverley and Cookley Parish Council are calling for Lea Lane, a shortcut between the two villages, to be repaired and reopened to traffic.

On March 1 2019, the roadway collapsed several metres into the nearby Worcestershire canal.

To mark the five years since the road closure, balloons were displayed on the roadside. Councillors want an update from Worcestershire County Council on when works to repair the road will take place.

Dean Cox, the chairman of Wolverley and Cookley Parish Council, said: "It's a bugbear of mine. It's a road, it always has been a road, and always should be a road.

"The road should be reinstated. Something just doesn't add up - that a road should be closed for five years. It's a crazy one really".

Parish councillor John Wood added: "The majority of the Cookley councillors very much want to see it reopened".

"It just gets pushed back and pushed back. It's a little bit of out of sight out of mind really.

"We still don't have a statement on when it's going to be repaired. Even though it's just a lane, it's still an alternative route.

"It's the shortest route between Wolverley and Cookley".

A spokesperson for Worcestershire County Council, said: “Worcestershire County Council has been attempting for some years to acquire land to enable repairs to take place.

"Given the sensitive nature of negotiations around this, we are unable to comment further at this time.”
