A NEW town mayor has been elected and declared the youngest Mayor of Kidderminster.

Councillor George Connolly, aged 27, was appointed town mayor for the civic year.

He was appointed at Kidderminster Town Council’s annual meeting held on Thursday, May 16, at St. George's Church.

He will be supported by his partner, Faye Irving, who will be the mayoress for the year.

Councillor Ben Brookes proposed councillor Connolly as mayor, declaring that if elected, he would be the youngest Mayor of Kidderminster.

Councillor Connolly, who has served as the deputy mayor to councillor Darren Chambers for the past 12 months, said that he was honoured to be elected Town Mayor and thanked the audience at St. George's Church.

The new Mayor of Kidderminster said: “I am born and bred in Kidderminster, having gone to school at Franche and Baxter College.

"I’m currently employed in the construction industry as a design coordinator for a Midlands-based business.

"I look forward to working with all councillors, regardless of political party, for the greater good of Kidderminster.

"I also look forward to seeing the completion of the Town Hall next year and seeing this become a major success and a fantastic asset for the people of Kidderminster.”

During his mayoral year, councillor Connolly will be raising funds and awareness for the Motor Neurone Disease Association who focus on improving access to care, research and campaigning for those people living with or affected by Motor Neurone Disease in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Councillor Doug Hine was also elected as the deputy mayor.
