Severn Valley Railway's flagship locomotive has celebrated its 95th birthday.

Steam engine No 4930 ‘Hagley Hall’, established as the SVR's headliner 40 years ago, marked its milestone last weekend (May 25 and 26).

The train became famous when it hauled the first passenger carriage out of Kidderminster Town station, a feat it will re-enact in a commemorative event on the weekend of July 27 and 28.

'Hagley Hall' was in steam over the weekend, hauling passengers enjoying premium afternoon teas in its restored first-class dining car.

SVR's managing director, Jonathan 'Gus' Dunster, said: "We’d like to wish our special locomotive very many happy returns.

"It has a special place in the hearts of many of our volunteers and visitors.

"We were absolutely thrilled to welcome it back in 2022, following 36 years out of service when it was on static display and under restoration."

SVR's dedicated volunteers saved the train from a scrapyard fate in Barry in 1973.

They brought it to the SVR where, post-restoration, the train started working on the line in 1979, also making appearances on the main railway.

However, it was pulled from service in 1986 due to its boiler nearing the end of its 10-year safe operation period.
