A Stourport florist has been nominated as one of the 100 faces of floristry after working in the area for more than 30 years.

Suzanne Windmill, who runs studio-based florist Windmill Wonderland, has been working in the industry since she was 14.

Starting as a Saturday girl, she worked her way through college to gain her florist qualification and opened her first shop when she was just 23.

She ran the retail shop for 12 years before becoming studio-based to help care for her son who has complex disabilities.

She has now been creating beautiful floral displays for the community for more than 30 years and is set to join 1,000 other 'flower magicians' when the industry comes together to celebrate National Florist Day on June 8.

She said: "I am lucky to have the most wonderful and loyal customers, but I wanted to be part of this day to show them that floristry is an art and share some behind-the-scenes stories of how the magic happens.

"There is so much more to the flower industry than people think. It is a multi-billion-pound industry that stretches around the globe and not just up the road and comes with a lot of challenges.

"This includes making sure deliveries are on time, flowers are kept in perfect condition and having the rescue skills of an emergency service to make sure those all-important last-minute requests are dealt with."

National Florist Day is the first ever awareness campaign for the floricultural industry and will celebrate all that is wonderful about flowers as well as allow florists to showcase the skills that go into creating the perfect display.

The week-long 'Meet the Maker' showcase started on June 1 with Ms Windmill sharing stories about flowers, offering tips, activities and giveaways.

She is also showing off her designs and the flowers she has available.

She said: "I always say I have the most amazing job in the world and it's my therapy. I'm so very lucky to do what I do and get to help people on every occasion in their lives.

"Being part of National Florist Day will allow me to share just some of the magic I'm lucky enough to create every day."

Ms Windmill has also been nominated by her community as one of the 100 faces of floristry and has been described as a "florist industry hero".

She has received an outpouring of support from her customers and said it is an honour to be recognised.

Caroline Marshall-Foster, editor of The Florist Trade Magazine and founder of National Florist Day, said: "There is something magical about working with flowers and florists are often at the heart of every community.

"Not only purveyors of beautiful blooms but engaging with everyone across all ages and often seen as a safe place for a drop in and chat."
