THE Queen’s food critic son has named a Bewdley chip shop as one of the best in the country.
Food writer Tom Parker Bowles has included Merchants as one of his 37 “ultimate chippies.”
In an article for Mail Online, the writer, who has dined in more than 5,000 restaurants, revealed his top spots for fish and chips across the country, describing the cuisine as a “natural obsession” and an “integral part of British heritage”.
Merchants, on Load Street, makes the cut, with the writer saying they serve up “some serious fish and chips.”
In the Mail Online article, he said: “Winner of many an awards, Merchants is adored for good reason.
“This Midlands chippy (and there are three branches) serves up some serious fish and chips.
“Owner Kyriacos Akathiotis has passed on the baton, after 50 years, to his son Anthony.
“It’s a favourite of Robert Plant, that Led Zeppelin legend and the quality, as he once almost sang, remains the same”.
Reacting to being named in the list, Merchants owner Anthony said his team deserved the recognition.
He said: “The guys here deserve it. We have got a good working team. We are consistently good and that’s what matters”.
