A FOOD bank was forced to close and quickly relocate after water flooded its base at a shopping centre.

Kidderminster Food Bank, which is based at the Swan Centre, had to turn people away on Wednesday (June 19) after water flooded the entrance.

The food bank believes the water had come from the empty unit next door at the shopping centre.

However, in just a couple of hours, volunteers transformed an empty shop in the shopping centre, formerly occupied by Super Cuts, into a temporary home for the food bank while the flooding issue is resolved.

Volunteers were busy moving crates full of food to its temporary home around the corner.

It means the food bank will now be opening on Friday (June 21) from 12.30pm until 3pm as normal.

Nina Price, manager of Kidderminster Foodbank, said: "We had a flood in our food bank. We have had water come through from the next door empty unit and flooded the entrance of the shop.

"There's long discussions going on with Severn Trent. They have had engineers on site".

"Unfortunately, we had to turn a few people away just because we couldn't physically let them into the shop.

"Anyone who couldn't come on Wednesday, they can come back tomorrow".

Ms Price praised the team of volunteers for their swift actions to help get the food bank operations back up and running.

She added: "We had a team of ten volunteers come in and they were absolutely brilliant".

People wanting to make donations can bring food or toiletries straight to Kidderminster Foodbank on Monday's, Wednesday's or Friday's between 10am and 3pm.

People can also donate at the Tesco shop at Weavers Wharf in Kidderminster and Stourport or Sainsbury's in Kidderminster and Bewdley.
