SOME residents have been allowed to return to their homes tonight after police found “suspicious items” at an address on Stourport Road, Kidderminster.

Police said tonight (Sunday June 30) at 8pm that “a number of people are now able to return to their properties following yesterday’s incident” as the 100-metre cordon starts to lift.

They announced earlier today that a 51-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the incident, which saw the bomb squad called in, and is in custody for questioning.

Residents of Stourport Road to Reservoir Road from the Kidderminster town centre direction are allowed to return, but the 100-metres remains closed to vehicles due to the emergency services needing access.

People are asked to check the diversions before starting any journeys.

A spokesperson for West Mercia Police said: “A 40-metre cordon within the original zone remains unchanged and people living within it will not be able to return to their homes tonight.

“This cordon covers the following areas: “Parts of Stourport Road and Goldthorn Road, with pedestrian access to Beauchamp Avenue, and vehicle access to Lisle Avenue.”

Accommodation is available for people who cannot return home and are unable to make their own arrangements, by calling Wyre Forest District Council on 01562 732225.

It will be the second night these residents have been unable to access their homes.

Anyone who is unsure about how the change in cordons affects them should contact the council.

The spokesperson added: “Thank you for your patience and understanding while we continue to carry out searches of the property on Stourport Road.”
