Residents have shared their "shock" and "fear" after the bomb squad was called to a street in Kidderminster.

West Mercia Police closed Stourport Road and a number of adjacent streets after "suspicious items" were found in one of the properties.

Many families had to evacuate their homes with others in the area forced to find alternative routes due to the two-day road closures.

Police remain on the scene today with residents in the affected streets talking to The Shuttle about the impact the last few days have had on them.

Resident Steph Davis said: "It was really shocking and scary to come home and find out that something potentially quite serious was happening right on our doorstep.

"I have young children so we decided to leave our home. My son overheard what the officers were saying about the incident and was very upset, so we decided it was best to evacuate for them and to make sure they were safe.

"My husband stayed home to find out what was going on but it was very surreal. We did have officers knock on our doors and take statements but thankfully we are all back home now."

Another resident, who asked to remain anonymous, said: "Luckily we weren't too affected by the road closures as we were away on holiday and only came back on Saturday night.

"We were advised to evacuate by officers when we returned but we chose to stay in our home. We were told if we were staying then we should shut all our windows and doors.

"The police were being very strict on who was entering the cordon. I tried to pop down to get a chippy from Foleys but I was stopped. I did manage to get my food in the end but it was all very shocking to come home to after being away on holiday."

West Mercia Police reopened Stourport Road late last night (Sunday, June 30) with residents being allowed to return to their homes.

A 51-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the incident and remains in police custody.

Resident Alice Howell added: "I don't know much about what happened but we didn't evacuate as we have a baby and dogs in the house.

"We shut all our windows and doors and were being updated by officers who were going around the streets.

"I just can't believe this has happened."
