Friends and family of a "kind and generous" mum from Kidderminster have appealed for help to transform her new home following a devastating diagnosis.

Katy Smith, aged 41, was initially diagnosed with ocular cancer and lost vision in her right eye.

Despite thinking she had the all-clear, the cancer has returned for a second time but metastasised in her liver.

The mum-of-one, who has been described as "incredibly caring" by her friends, now faces a gruelling amount of treatment ahead.

As well as facing her recent diagnosis, the single mum found out her landlord is selling her rented property. After six months on the waiting list, she has now been offered a property but it comes undecorated and with no flooring.

Her friend Catherine Bratton, aged 45, said: "Katy is so kind and generous. She is an incredibly caring and loving mum to her son Jack who has been so brave. She will always put the kettle on for you and would give anyone the shirt off her own back.

"Finding out the cancer has metastasised in her liver has come as a devastating blow for Katy and the family. On top of that, she is having to move into a property that needs completely redecorating.

"As her friends and family, we can be there for her emotionally, but we really need help from the community and manpower to create Katy and Jack's forever home."

Her friend Anna Hill has now set up a GoFundMe to help raise funds to support Katy and her family during this difficult time as Katy is unable to work due to her diagnosis and treatment.

The money will also help Katy make lasting memories with her son.

As well as donations, her friends are also asking local tradespeople to help donate materials and time to redecorate and transform the house and garden.

They have already had support from a business, who want to remain anonymous, to help with the carpets, and Colin Mugridge from CM Removals who has generously offered to move Katy into her new home for free.

Ms Bratton, who is an accountant, added: "We really need a bit of a Kidderminster DIY SOS to come and transform the house. We are so grateful for the support we have already received and Katy has been so overwhelmed by the donations.

"It would be incredible if even more local businesses and individuals could help with donations, materials or time.

"Katy is so lovely and has remained her positive and hilarious self throughout everything she is going through at the moment. She is a ray of sunshine and it means the world to us to be able to give something back to her for everything she does for us.

"Her parents and sisters have been incredibly supportive and she has such an amazing family around her. We really need the community to come together to help us and we are appealing to our fellow Kidderminster residents for support."

The GoFundMe has already raised more than £2,600 of the £3,000 to help transform the new home.
