Severn Valley Railway is set to celebrate 40 years since the opening of Kidderminster Town station.

Festivities commemorating the landmark occasion will take place throughout the weekend of July 27 and 28.

The headline moment of the event will be a re-enactment of the first train that departed from the station back in 1984.

The original locomotive, 4930 'Hagley Hall', will be taking to the tracks once again, after successful restoration at the start of 2022.

SVR’s managing director, Jonathan ‘Gus’ Dunster, said: "Opening up the SVR to Kidderminster was a massive boon to us 40 years ago.

"It meant our line gave the full experience of heritage rail travel along a 16-mile route to Bridgnorth in Shropshire, and that we were accessible to a huge market of visitors coming from Birmingham, the Black Country and the wider Midlands area."

On the Saturday there will be a commemorative ceremony at 12pm, prior to the departure of the 'Kidderminster Venturer' special.

This train is also set to run again at 12.30pm on the Sunday.

Other attractions for the weekend include a display of classic vehicles that would have once journeyed down the roads in the year the station was inaugurated.

Organisers will also host an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour of Kidderminster's signal box and carriage works.

Also, Kidderminster Railway Museum will have on display a new exhibition that tells the story of the station with archive photographs and personal accounts.

The SVR is known for preserving heritage lines, and will be marking its 60th anniversary with special events and commemorations next year.
