SUPER spellers from a Wyre Forest village school clinched first place in an inaugural county-wide spelling competition.

Two teams of three Year 5 pupils at Wilden All Saints CE Primary School were put to the test in the Spelling Bees contest staged at King’s School, Worcester.

The children had two days to practice spelling 99 words, above the expected level for their age, and were individually given words to spell aloud and pronounce on stage in knockout rounds.

Teacher Sharon Mills said: “Both teams did so well in what was quite a daunting contest and we were thrilled when Nell Watts, Lucas Parker and Henry Eden won the competition in a very close finish by just two words.”

Nell also won bronze for finishing as the third best individual speller.

Mrs Mills added: “I am so proud of all of them for working so incredibly hard and as they grew in confidence reciting the spellings on stage in front of a large audience.”
