A BRAVE cancer patient from Kidderminster has won a prestigious award after raising more than £60k in to find better treatments for children.

Ten-year-old Libby Atkins’ inspirational efforts include a bake sale from her hospital bed whilst undergoing treatment, a black-tie charity dinner, and rallying the support of her local community to host raffles and events.

Libby’s journey began two years ago when she was diagnosed with Ewing sarcoma — the second most common form of bone cancer in children and young adults — at just eight years old.

Her shock diagnosis came after a fall whilst playing on Cleethorpes Beech in Lincolnshire, after which doctors discovered a tumour in her left femur (thigh bone) following multiple tests.

Despite the fourteen rounds of chemotherapy and invasive surgeries that followed, Libby continued thinking of others in a moving display of selflessness.

During her treatment, Libby and her family decided to set up Libby’s Journey of Life, a Special Fund of the Bone Cancer Research Trust, to help fund kinder, more effective treatments for future patients.

Libby’s remarkable efforts gained widespread attention on social media as part of the charity’s Childhood Cancer Awareness Month campaign, capturing the hearts of many who were moved by Libby’s display of strength and kindness.

Siobhan Cullen, Regional Relationship Manager at the Bone Cancer Research Trust, said: “When Libby was diagnosed, her family’s world fell apart, but Libby wasn’t going to let that stop her helping others.

"To raise over £60,000 in one year whilst undergoing 14 rounds of chemotherapy and surgery is nothing short of remarkable.

"Libby is an extraordinary young girl whose spirit and determination continues to astound us all, and we couldn’t be more proud of her.”

Libby’s dad, Craig Atkins, proudly accepted the award on stage at the QEII centre in London on his daughter’s behalf.

The £60k raised by Libby will be used to support cutting-edge research projects aimed at improving treatments for Ewing sarcoma patients — providing hope to families facing a similar journey.
