A public memorial service is set to celebrate the life and legacy of a highly respected and much-loved former MP.

Dr Richard Taylor MBE is fondly remembered across the Wyre Forest constituency for his incredible work as an MP fighting to protect NHS services.

The retired hospital consultant was elected as an independent MP in 2001 and served two terms in parliament for Independent Community and Health Concern.

He later went on to form the National Health Action Party and was president of Leukaemia Care for more than 15 years.

He initially stood for election to prevent the downgrading of Kidderminster Hospital and to restore its A&E department, but in his time serving the people of Wyre Forest, he proved himself to be a man who cared about every issue affecting the lives of people in his constituency.

Dr Taylor died on Wednesday, June 26, just a few days short of his 90th birthday.

In a previous tribute, his wife Chris Taylor said: "Richard's dedication to the local community and NHS was more than matched by his dedication to his family. He was a marvellous husband, father and grandfather who was loved by us all.

"The outpouring of love from everyone - especially normal people in the streets of Kidderminster and the many charities and causes he supported - has been a great comfort.

"Many thanks to everyone for their support and tributes. He will be sadly missed."

His family has also described him as a kind and honest man who continues to be recognised as an important part of the Wyre Forest community.

They have now invited previous constituents and friends to honour and celebrate his life during a memorial service at St Mary and All Saints' Church in Kidderminster.

The service will take place on Saturday, August 17 at 2.30pm.

The Taylor family said: "As well as a wonderful father and husband, we're well aware of the vital role Dr Taylor played in our local community.

"We're so proud to have the opportunity to share his legacy with the people he loved here in Wyre Forest and everyone is welcome."
