WORK to bulldoze the old County Buildings, previously home to fire and police stations, has restarted after they were previously ground to a halt.

Worcestershire County Council started work earlier this year to demolish the buildings in Stourport, which were also used for a medical centre, a library and a coroner’s court before they were relocated.

In March, the authority confirmed that work stopped on demolition work due to bat surveys that needed to be carried out.

Following online speculation regarding the reason for work stopping, the council said that asbestos removal was carried out before the demolition work started.

At the time when the work stopped, a spokesperson for Worcestershire County Council said: “We can confirm asbestos removal was carried out as a pre-requisite to the demolition taking place.

“We are currently awaiting the further bat surveys to be completed and a bat licence issued for the further demolition of the main building.

“We are still on track to have the demolition done and the site levelled by the Autumn.”

Confirming that work is now back up and running, the council added: "The main demolition contract has started on site last week, following on from the conclusion of the bat surveys".

It was revealed in 2022 that Worcestershire County Council were selling the site, with an application lodged to bulldoze the buildings.

The application was given the green light later that year, with the site earmarked for a new development.
