'Worcestershire's King Canute' has released an e-book that is a practical guide on flood prevention.

The guide, named 'The Great Wall of Pixham: Our Journey and Practical Guide to Building a Flood Wall' is penned by Nick Lupton, and his wife Annie.

In the book they document their experiences of combating flooding at their home by the River Severn, by erecting a barrier around their 17th-century property.

The Luptons bought Pixham House in 2016, aware of the flood risks associated with the location.

Fearing the water would eventually structurally damage the house, they decided to build a wall around the property.

Since its construction, the wall has successfully withstood three floods and has been instrumental in protecting the house structure.

Mr Lupton said: "For us, the wall has been a complete game changer.

"When flooding occurs, we now have a dry layer of land between the house and the wall giving us peace of mind.

"We featured on the BBC in January 2024 and, since then, have been inundated with interest from people in how we did it, what we did, and seeking advice."

The guide provides a start-to-finish walkthrough of the project, covering aspects such as getting permissions and consents, designing the wall, selecting materials, project management, the building phase, and lessons they've learned.

Their e-book is also hosted on the FloodMary.com website, a platform headed by Mary Long-Dhonau OBE, a property flood resilience champion and former flood victim.

Ms Long-Dhonau said: "Nick originally featured in my e-book.

"Now, Nick has gone a massive step further with building this significant wall to help resist the mighty River Severn."

Mr Lupton concluded: "Pixham House has a rich history and we want to preserve it for the future.

"If we hadn’t have built the flood wall, I fear the longevity of the building would have been compromised.

"Flooding can be a devastating experience, but with the right knowledge and preparation, we show that it is possible to safeguard your home – and your sanity."
