AN event highlighting the UK’s Merchant Navy seafarers took place at Wyre Forest District Council’s headquarters on Tuesday (September 3).
Wyre Forest District Council chairman councillor John Byng, raised the red ensign flag at Wyre Forest House where it will proudly fly for one week.
The ceremony took place to honour the brave men and women of the Merchant Navy, past and present.
Members of the public were invited to join service organisations to commemorate Merchant Navy Day.
Merchant Navy Day honours and remembers the sacrifices of the often forgotten and invisible, but hard-working Merchant Navy seafarers, who kept Britain afloat during both World War.
It also celebrates the dependence on modern-day merchant seafarers who are said to be responsible for more than 90 per cent of the UK’s imports.
The ceremony started with a formal welcome from councillor Byng, at 9.45am. The chairman, who was joined by standard bearers, then raised the flag.
Councillor Byng said: “We must acknowledge the sacrifices and commitment of the courageous and selfless individuals in the Merchant Navy community, both past and present
