A vets in Stourport has issued an important message to dog owners following several cases of Parvovirus in the local area over the last few weeks.
In a post on social media, Bay Tree Veterinary Centre Ltd said they had seen several cases of the illness recently and other local practices in the area have also confirmed the same.
They have now issued some important advice to dog owners on how to spot the early signs of Parvovirus which includes lethargy, vomiting and diarrhoea.
The symptoms can be caused by other illness but the vets confirmed that they have tests which can help identity the virus quickly.
In a post on Facebook, Bay Tree Veterinary Centre Ltd said: "Unfortunately, Bay Tree Vets have seen several cases of Parvovirus over the last few weeks. We have also spoken to other local practices who have confirmed the same.
"We have tests, which use a small amount of your dog’s poo, that can help identify the virus very quickly.
"Parvovirus mainly affects puppies and dogs who are not vaccinated though a small proportion of vaccinated dogs can also be affected. Our annual vaccinations provide protection against parvovirus, and vaccination is the best way to prevent your pet contracting the disease."
Parvovirus is highly contagious and spreads through bodily fluids of dogs including poo and vomit.
The virus can remain in the environment outside the body for a year, or possibly more, and can be spread on owner’s shoes or clothing.
It is important to make sure your dog's vaccinations are up to date and call your vets if you have any concerns over their health.
