The documentary is to be 60 minutes long and will be broadcast on the channel and BBC iPlayer.
Nasfim Haque, head of content on the channel, said: "This is a great opportunity for West Midlands indies to pitch their best and most innovative ideas to us.
"We can’t wait to see what the creative community in the West Midlands will pitch."
The West Midlands IP Fund supports the initiative, providing development funding in the region.
The fund is also backed by the West Midlands Combined Authority and Create Central and delivered by Creative UK.
Ed Shedd, chair of Create Central, said: "By investing in high-quality intellectual property and fostering homegrown talent, we are not only boosting the region’s creative output but also generating real economic value and opportunities for new talent.
"BBC Three’s call for ideas for a new current affairs documentary is the perfect way to ignite this momentum and create lasting opportunities for our local creative sector."
