An "inspirational and kind-hearted" community champion was blown away after staff at Kidderminster Hospital held a special appreciation day in his honour.
Fred Holland is a diabetes campaigner who has raised thousands of pounds for good causes over the years and has been instrumental in improving diabetes care for people in and around Kidderminster.
After recently having a fall, the staff at the hospital wanted to do something to cheer Mr Holland up and show him how much he means to the community.
Melissa Butler, team leader for booking services at Kidderminster Hospital, said: "Fred is such an inspirational and kind-hearted man. He does so much for the community so when we heard about his fall, we wanted to do something to help cheer him up.
"It was a really lovely day and so many people came out to show their support. He was really blown away and got a bit emotional when he did a little speech.
"He has done so much for the trust and always wants to help. He is part of our hospital family and we hope he realises how much he means to us all."
In 2012, the Diabetes Centre at Kidderminster Hospital was renamed the Fred Holland Centre for Diabetes with the 88-year-old even receiving a British Citizen Award in 2017.
A huge number of people came to show their support for Mr Holland at the appreciation day including representatives from Diabetes UK, hospital staff, friends and family.
The children from Abberley Care Farm also brought their therapy dog and painted an incredible picture for Mr Holland which will hang with pride at the hospital.
Ms Butler, who is from Bromsgrove, added: "It was such a heartwarming day and we even decorated our All Year Round Tree with pictures and messages for Fred.
"All our visitors had a treat and tucked into a specially made cake.
"He is a fabulous man and we are so grateful for everything he does for the hospital trust."
