Tributes have been paid to a much-loved greengrocer from Kidderminster who has died aged 91.
Barry Onslow died on Sunday, October 13, and was the last of a long line of notable greengrocers, fruiterers and fishmongers who traded in Wyre Forest over a period of more than 180 years.
He was part of the family business which traded on The Butts in Kidderminster together with his father Roland, his mother Mary and his brother Eric.
After the death of his father in 1969, Barry opened his own shops, firstly in Stourport followed by shops in Hurcott Road and Worcester Street in Kidderminster.
With the arrival of supermarkets, Barry made the decision to convert to supplying goods to local fish and chip shops between Birmingham and Kidderminster.
Whilst still a shopkeeper and much later on into retirement, Barry formed a property company with a portfolio stretching across retail, residential and industrial properties.
The family also appeared in several books about Kidderminster including Ken Tomkinson's book 'Characters of Kidderminster'.
His family said Barry was "very much a local character" who is fondly remembered for his exploits including a successful £50 bet with a local bookmaker that he could drive to Monte Carlo and back in under four days in 1964.
He is also remembered for the painted ostrich egg saga, his 'short break' with Gill in 1972 which involved six months driving across Europe to Baghdad and the Middle East, and achieving international notoriety with the 'Watership Down' incident.
Barry is survived by his partner of 31 years Sheila Needham, his children James and Tracey and their mother Gill, in-laws Jane and Graham and his grandchildren Jack, Millie, Ben, Holly, Nathan and Zac.
His daughter councillor Tracey Onslow, Chairman of Worcestershire County Council, said: "He was a super dad and he will be greatly missed by his partner Sheila and all his family."
A funeral service will be held at St John's Church, Bewdley Road, Kidderminster, DY11 6RL at 2pm on Wednesday, November 13.
The family said: "Barry was renowned for drinking tea so please join us at the church at 2pm for a 'cuppa' followed by the funeral service.
"If you haven't had enough by then, you are also welcome to attend Wyre Forest Crematorium for a short cremation service."
