A Labour councillor has made the "sad" decision to stand down from Kidderminster Town Council.

Daniel Round, a councillor for the Broadwaters ward, decided to resign following a number of personal and political reasons including "deep-seated issues with the national Labour government".

Councillor Round, who was elected in May, published his resignation letter on Facebook and said one of the reasons for his resignation was due to working in Birmingham which would make it difficult to attend important council meetings.

He also cited the national Labour stance on the two-child benefit cap, the cuts to the Winter Fuel Payments and the conflict in the Middle East.

Councillor Round said: "The political situation at the national level has forced me to re-consider whether I can be a Labour representative at the local level.

"A series of decisions taken by the Labour government will have a deeply negative impact in Broadwaters and Kidderminster as a whole. This includes the maintenance of the Tories' two-child benefit limit, the cut to the Winter Fuel Allowance and, more recently, the short-sighted raising of the bus fare cap.

"Furthermore, it is a moral strain on the government that it has continued to allow the sale of most weapons to Israel whilst it pummels Gaza and doubles down on denying the rights of the Palestinian people."

He said that he will remain a Labour member and continue to fight for "pro-working class, socialist and internationalist policies within the party".

In response to councillor Round's decision to step down, Kidderminster Town Council said they were not aware of an official letter of resignation being handed to the town mayor but they would be "sorry" to see Mr Round step down.

Chief Executive of Kidderminster Town Council Hugh Peacocke said: "We would hate to lose Daniel. He has been duly elected by the people of Broadwaters to serve the community.

"If he decides to resign then that is his call but he is a very capable councillor and we would be sorry to see him go."

Councillor Liam Carroll, leader of Kidderminster Labour Group, said: "We are sad to see the resignation of Cllr Round from Kidderminster Town Council.

"We are grateful for his work and contributions to the Labour Group."
