A FREE firework display set to be held in the town centre has faced backlash from residents worried about their "poor" pets.

Kidderminster BID has organised the display as part of the town's annual Christmas lights switch-on extravaganza, which is on Saturday, November 16.

But on social media, some residents have questioned why fireworks will be let off at the Christmas event, 11 days after Bonfire Night on November 5.

Some have branded the event "ridiculous," with residents concerned about how the loud noise will affect their pets.

Kym Lines said: "Bonfire Night was on the 5th."

Lynn Taylor said: "Hate to be a 'baa humbug' but thanks for the heads up. I'll have to drug my very anxious dog again".

Lynn Darlington said: "I hope they are silent."

Lynda White added: "Not more - my poor doggy."

However, others expressed their excitement at the event, with parents saying they will be taking their children to watch the fireworks.

James Barker, Kidderminster BID leader, said: "From a BID point of view we don't do anything for Bonfire Night so we are really geared up for one massive occasion.

"We think Kidderminster deserves a great occasion. We have professionals that will be running it.

"This isn't a paid-for event, you can turn up for free. Not everyone can afford to go to a firework display.

"We hope everybody that turns up has an amazing night".

The fireworks will be set off outside the Swan Shopping Centre at 7pm on the night and last for between five and seven minutes.

Town centre visitors will be able to watch live music as well as walkabout acts, circus skills, street performers, craft stalls, face painting, fire breathing and more, at the event.

The event is set to take place on Saturday from 3.30pm until 9.15pm with the Christmas lights set to be turned on at 6pm.
