Severn Trent has urged households to be cautious about what they pour down the sink on 'Stir-up Sunday'.

This is the traditional day, November 24, when families prepare their Christmas puddings.

The water company warns that ingredients like cake batter, fats, oils, and greases can cause significant issues if disposed of down the drain.

They can build up to create blockages and fatbergs in the sewers, potentially leading to flooding in homes.

Grant Mitchell, blockages lead at the water company, said: "We all love the festive treats, I know I do, but that could also mean extra fats, oils and greases are being disposed of in incorrect ways.

"By working together, we can reduce blockages that have a massive, and sometimes costly, impact on customers."

The company cleared 28,782 blockages last year, which could have been avoided if incorrect items were not put down the toilet and sink.

It also removed 14 million litres of fats, oil, and greases from sewers.
