STAFF at the oldest pub in Kidderminster have come up with an egg-cellent way to raise money for charity.
Ye Olde Seven Stars in Coventry Street, Kidderminster is raising funds for Kemp Hospice using 15 former battery hens and one cockerel.
The birds were rescued by pub landlord, Robin Copeman and his son, Matt, and are now kept on a piece of land, ranging freely at the bottom of the beer garden.
Customers at the pub can sponsor a hen for a one-off donation of £5, which is donated to the hospice. When a box of six eggs is filled, a customer’s name is pulled out of a hat and they receive their eggs.
So far, more than 40 people have sponsored a hen and receive an average of six free range eggs a month, which has already raised £200 for Kemp Hospice.
Matt said: “It seemed like such a good idea to give these chickens a second chance but also to provide free range eggs to our customers.”
They have also installed “chick TV” in the pub so, instead of watching Big Brother, customers can watch the chickens live.
Robin and Matt have helped raise money for Kemp before. In June they held a ghost walk, which raised £150 and, last month, Matt had a sponsored spray tan.
