Towards the end of the spring term many Year 6 pupils took part in an exciting ‘Dig for Victory’ at Burlish Park Primary School, Stourport.
Luckily, our gardening advisors, Ray and Mrs Williams, were on hand to offer their assistance. First we were required to place our potatoes in empty egg boxes. We were told to leave them on a windowsill (where the sun is). They were potatoes from last year - the Pink Fur Apples and King Edwards. We went over to the allotments and had the chance to plant the potatoes; while we were there we had a tour around the allotment.
We spoke to a man who was busy working away; he told us that the vegetables that he grows on his patch of land (including potatoes) enable him to feed most members of his family. He has two allotments and realises that he is very lucky because there is a long waiting list of people waiting to acquire an allotment!
This superb educational opportunity wouldn’t have been available without our teachers and teaching assistants’ support and encouragement. Mrs Williams is an amazing eco-warrior and we should thank her for organising the event! What will our potatoes turn into? A feast or a complete disaster!
